Jim Osborn & Tom Kopec Photos

These digital photographs are presented so that you may see (and enjoy) what the photographer's skill can capture when shooting with superior equipment. This is true even when shots are taken on an unfinished layout using only available light!

The first two photos were taken by my friend Jim Osborn using a Nikon D70 with a 35-70mm Nikon zoom lens. Interestingly, Jim controlled, snapped, and viewed the shots through his laptop computer during a June 2006 photo shoot.

The third and fourth photos were taken by my friend Tom Kopec using his professional-grade Nikon D2X with a Nikon 85mm perspective control lens. These photos were taken in May 2007.

I think you will agree when I say that a talented photographer can get amazing results when using such fine equipment. I, for one, have certainly enjoyed these views of the K&BH. Thanks for joining us for this visit.

      Kearney Station

Notice the depth of field when using available light in this long shot. You'll see the "frame" that the Second Avenue overpass provides in this view of the Kearney station [an unfinished Walthers kit]. Jim Osborn photo, June 2006

      Ethanol Plant

While this photo catches a bit of the main line action near the KAAPA ethanol transfer station, note the wonderful illusion of depth in this scene. Friend Bill Leider, MMR, painted the backdrop on the layout and it is less than 24" away from the camera. Jim Osborn photo, June 2006

      6600 at KYJ

K&BH 6600 shows up once again in this scene as it works through Kearney Junction (KYJ). You'll see the incredible detail that this camera captures on the big GE diesel. The K&BH local's caboose is moving out of sharp focus in this shot, but not to worry — that is one of the intentional controls that Tom's camera gives him. You'll see the difference in the next photo, I promise. Tom Kopec photo, May 2007

      UP at KYJ

The K&BH local hasn't departed yet, but UP 4016 has now moved alongside while awaiting clearance to head west to North Platte. His ditch lights are off so I think he will be here awhile. You'll notice how the depth of field now permits a sharp focus on the caboose and even on the Boyd Ag Group covered hopper up ahead. Don't miss the effect of the scenic background that Bill Leider has provided for a shot like this. Visitors to the layout even get a kick out of the Nebraska Patrol car overhead — I wonder what the FedEx guy did to warrant this stop? Tom Kopec photo, May 2007
